Upon retirement in 2016, I made a commitment to adapt a healthier lifestyle so I could fully enjoy and have the energy to live an active life. This journey did not begin as a weight loss plan. My mindset was on living a healthier and more active life. So, I started a walking program and then joined the Advocate BroMenn Health & Fitness Center that September. My goals were to improve my flexibility and balance, eat healthier and lose weight. I have lost 100+ pounds since retirement, the vast majority since joining the Fitness Center. I have also lowered my cholesterol and significantly lowered my blood pressure.
Taking care of myself has become my focus. My workouts are now a priority and I schedule other activities around them. I have much more energy and physical tasks such as climbing stairs, walking, standing for long periods and even things such as getting in and out of the car are so much easier now.
My family has been very supportive of my goals and are proud of what I have achieved, I look forward to my upcoming trip with my husband to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary but, mostly I look forward to enjoying a long and healthy retirement.
I am most proud of how I have maintained my commitment to a healthier lifestyle by eating healthier and exercising. I never thought I would be a “regular” exerciser. As a result, at age 67 I lost the weight on my own without surgery or special diets. I have also improved my balance and flexibility to the point where I can now ride a bike for the first time in many years.
The Center has been an integral part of my success by providing a clean, non-intimidating, medically based Center with a welcoming atmosphere and a wide variety of options and state of the art technology. I especially appreciate the fact that all members go through an initial assessment by a degreed professional who works with you to come up with a program tailored to your goals. My Fitness Coach even took into consideration the total knee replacement I had three years ago and was able to provide me with modified exercises that would be less stressful on my knee.
There is truly something for everyone no matter fitness level or age.
